ABSTRACT

The struggle between personal independence and familial expectations remains a significant challenge for women navigating marriage and career choices. This research examines the socio-legal dimensions of this conflict, exploring how traditional gender roles, cultural norms, and legal frameworks shape women’s autonomy in decision-making. While constitutional and international provisions advocate for gender equality, personal laws, and societal expectations often impose restrictions on women’s ability to balance professional aspirations with familial obligations.

The study adopts a multidisciplinary approach, integrating legal analysis with sociological perspectives to understand the interplay of patriarchy, economic dependence, and institutional barriers in shaping women’s choices. Case studies and judicial precedents highlight the challenges women face in asserting their rights within marriage and employment, while comparative legal analysis provides insights into best practices from other jurisdictions.

Empirical findings underscore the role of education, financial independence, and supportive legal policies in empowering women to challenge restrictive norms. However, gaps in implementation, workplace discrimination, and the stigma surrounding independent women continue to impede progress. The paper advocates for legal reforms, policy interventions, and societal change to ensure that women can exercise their right to personal and professional fulfillment without undue familial pressure.

By addressing the legal and cultural dimensions of this issue, the research aims to contribute to ongoing discussions on gender equality and women’s empowerment. It underscores the necessity for a balanced approach that respects personal autonomy while acknowledging familial responsibilities in a rapidly evolving society.
